When you think back on your best clothes shopping experiences, what comes to mind? The most iconic shopping trips we make is usually when we’re buying clothes for a special occasion such as weddings and graduations—and I don’t think it’s about the dresses or the tuxes. I think it’s about the experience and how it differs from your average shopping trip.
Trying on clothes can be such a vulnerable experience, but big chains and department stores seem set on making the experience even worse. From the overhead fluorescent lighting to the tiny rooms, it’s like those dressing rooms were designed specifically to make us feel awful. And there’s a special awfulness to the dressing rooms that only have a mirror in the common part of a busy dressing room, adding the risk of strangers’ looks—or worse, their unsolicited opinions—when you step out.
